Volunteer Opportunities

ABPANC relies on the knowledge and expertise of CPAN® and CAPA®-certified nurses to guide our organization’s future efforts. Read the information below to find a volunteer opportunity that best allows you to impact perianesthesia nursing and CPAN/CAPA certification.

Item Writing

How can you become an Item Writer?

  1. Be a CPAN or CAPA certified nurse expressing a desire to write items for the certification examinations.
  2. Attend an Item Writing Workshop
  3. Apply to the ABPANC office.
  • Candidates are notified of appointment and receive further information about how to participate in the Item Writing Drive.
  • Item Writers receive two (2) contact hours for each item submitted, and can earn up to 60 contact hours in a 3-year recertification period to apply toward recertification. CPAN and CAPA Item Writing Review Committee (IWRC)

How can you become an Item Writer?
Be a CPAN or CAPA expressing a desire, attend an Item Writing Workshop and apply to the ABPANC office. Candidates are notified of appointment status and can participate in Item Writing Drive. ABPANC and PES will send orientation packet and/or access information on www.cpancapa.org.

Committee Positions — CPAN/CAPA Item Writing Review Committee (IWRC)
Committee positions consist of CPAN and CAPA certified nurses recruited from Item Writing Workshops, call for writers, and recommendations of ABPANC Board members. IWRC members write items for the bank completing assignments based on needs of the bank. Members receive 2 Contact Hours for each submitted item, and can earn up to 60 contact hours in a 3-year recertification period to apply towards recertification.

Committee members meet for two days each November to review all items that have been submitted for future use on examinations. Once items are reviewed for accuracy of answers, geographic and gender bias, language clarity, and relevancy to perianesthesia practice they are validated and approved for use on future examinations.

Selection Process
To become an Item Writer for potential Committee Appointment, submit application with a letter of intent, two letters of reference and a Curriculum Vitae (CV) to the National Office. Selection for Committee Members criteria considered:

  1. Geographical representation
  2. Work setting diversity
  3. Assignment completion
  4. Demonstration of understanding of item writing process
  5. Interview conducted by Chair and/or Chair Elect of ECC

Length of Term
1 year minimal, maximum of 3 years for committee members
