Each practice exam you take will offer a unique mix of 50 questions which will ensure minimal to no overlap in questions. Each examination costs $35. You can take an online practice examination at your convenience, using any computer that can connect to the Internet using a Microsoft Internet Explorer ™ browser.

ABPANC is now offering a special promotion, buy one practice exam and get one free.

Please note: ABPANC Practice Examinations are being hosted on the Professional Examination Service (PES) Computer-Based Testing Site in collaboration with TesTrac. PES hosts other organizations’ practice examinations as well. Look for the word ABPANC or the ABPANC logo when selecting a practice examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) have been developed to provide you with necessary information regarding the practice examinations.

Why should you take a practice examination?

Both the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations can:

  • Expose you to multiple-choice questions that are similar in form and content to the types of questions seen on the actual CPAN or CAPA certification examination;
  • Identify weak areas before final completion of educational programs;
  • Focus your study efforts as you design a study plan;
  • Serve as a final review before taking the CPAN or CAPA certification examination;
  • Help you assess the strengths and weaknesses of your perianesthesia nursing knowledge base in order to meet patient needs.

ABPANC’s practice examinations should be regarded as a tool to assess strengths and weaknesses. They are not intended to serve as a study guide nor should they be used as a substitute for studying. A passing score on a practice examination does not in any way guarantee a passing score on any ABPANC certification examination. Use of a practice examination is not a requirement for eligibility or for success in passing any ABPANC certification examination.

The purpose of a practice examination is to provide you with a simulated (or similar) experience to taking the actual CPAN or CAPA certification examination. Just like the real examination experience you will not be given the correct answer for each item nor will you be provided with the rationale for the correct answer. The scoring information that is provided will help guide you to identify further study needs and allow you to assess which domains you may need further study. The practice examination should be used as a tool to assess your level of preparedness for the actual examination. It is not intended to be a study guide or the sole means of study for the examination.

What are the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations like?

These practice examinations have been developed by CPAN and CAPA certified nurses who are content experts using the same methods used to develop the actual certification examinations.
Each of the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations are 50 questions in length and have been developed to correlate with the CPAN and CAPA examination blueprints. You will be tested on content that falls into the following four domains of perianesthesia patient needs and the nursing knowledge needed to meet those needs:

  • Physiological
  • Behavioral/Cognitive
  • Safety
  • Advocacy

The content of the practice examinations, while representative of the type of questions on the CPAN or CAPA certification examinations, does not necessarily mirror the content that will appear on the actual certification examinations.
You may choose the length of time in which you would like to complete a practice examination: (1) 1 hour and 15 minutes, which simulates the certification examination experience; or (2) 2 hours and 30 minutes, which provides double that amount of time. Each examination must be completed within the time period chosen. You will see an actual “screen time” for the time period you choose. The clock will adjust for any time lost moving from one question to the next.
Since each 50 item practice exam is designed to randomly select questions from the practice exam bank, each exam will offer a unique mix of questions which will ensure minimal to no overlap in questions each time you take another practice exam.

How are the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations scored?

Feedback about your performance on the practice examination will be given. The passing scores for the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations have been set by ABPANC at a total scale score of 450. For the purposes of scoring the practice examinations, an average of the passing points used in the past several administrations on the actual CPAN and CAPA examinations has been used to determine the number of questions one would have to answer correctly to achieve a scale score of 450 on the practice examinations.
Please note: A certain score on the practice examination does not in any way predict or guarantee the same or similar score on any of ABPANC’s actual certification examinations. Practice examinations can be used to provide an indication of your level or preparation for the actual certification examination, however they cannot be relied on to accurately predict performance on an actual certification examination.

What do the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations cost?

Each practice examination costs $35, payable by credit card. VISA, MasterCard, Discover, Diners, Cart Blanche and American Express are all acceptable for payment.

Can I earn contact hours for taking a CPAN or CAPA practice examination?

Yes, if you complete the practice examination and the evaluation tool.
If you select the 1 hour and 15 minute option to complete a practice examination, you will receive 1.25 contact hours; if you select the 2 hours and 30 minute option to complete a practice examination, you will receive 2.5 contact hours.
Once you complete a practice examination, you must complete the Evaluation Form, as instructed, in order to receive contact hours. ABPANC will mail you a Certification of Completion within three weeks of your completion of the practice examination. Click on the appropriate link, as instructed, to complete the Evaluation Form. This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
If you are using this activity to earn contact hours for CPAN and/or CAPA recertification purposes, this activity applies to Direct Care.

How can I find out about further study tools?

Once you complete a CPAN or CAPA practice examination, you will have access to several links as noted below.

  • CPAN/CAPA Certification Candidate Handbook
  • Study Tips brochure
  • Study References
  • Information about the Certification Coach program
  • Basis for examinations — a Role Delineation Study

How different are the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations — Can I take the practice examinations for both?

As you will note on the CPAN and CAPA examination blueprints, which serve as the basis for the construction of each actual examination as well as the practice examinations, the domains of patient needs — Physiological, Behavioral/Cognitive, Safety, and Advocacy, and the nursing knowledge needed to meet those needs - are the same for both the CPAN and CAPA certification programs. It is the percentage of questions asked in each domain of patient needs that varies, depending on whether the candidate is taking the CPAN or CAPA examination and the context for the questions will differ.
For added practice, a candidate may desire to take some or all of the CPAN and CAPA practice examinations.

How often may I take a practice examination?

You may take a practice exam as often as you like but please note that you must pay the fee of $35 for each practice examination taken.

Please note: After you log into the PES system, select “ABPANC” and “Buy an Exam.” Complete the practice exam. You will be assigned your new, free exam sometime after midnight after submitting your first exam. The free practice exam will be available in your account when you login the next time.
